Viktor Orbán’s Visit to Trump - a Russian Voice in Washington

Viktor Orbán will visit Washington on November 7 to personally deliver the Kremlin’s message to Donald Trump. His goal is clear: to convince the American president that the United States should abandon Ukraine and allow Russia to finish what it started in 2014. Orbán does not represent peace, but conquest — behind the “pro-peace” mask, he is carrying Moscow’s interests straight into the White House.

In response, Hungarian citizens who stand with America have sent a letter to Donald Trump, warning him not to fall for the siren song of Budapest’s propaganda. Today, the Hungarian prime minister acts as a Russian agent within NATO, seeking to break the unity of the West while keeping his own country deliberately dependent on Russia both politically and energetically. The authors of the letter ask for only one thing: that America once again stand on the side of freedom — as it has done in the greatest moments of history.

Dear President Trump,

Allow me first to express my respect for the role the United States of America has played throughout history in the defense of freedom. In the Second World War, the United States stood on the morally right side, and the outcome was shaped by America’s resolve. This helped the Western world defeat the destructive madness of Nazism. That victory benefited not only Europe but also the United States itself, as it laid the foundations for peace across much of the world and for a model of political and economic cooperation under American leadership.

You are right in saying that the war between Russia and Ukraine should never have broken out. This war occurred because Europe lost its independence — politically, strategically, and morally. When Russia occupied part of Ukraine in 2014, European leaders remained passive. Putin gained strength, and even after two ceasefire agreements — Minsk I and Minsk II — he continued pushing forward.

In the midst of this tragic situation, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán took the step of formally receiving Vladimir Putin in Budapest on February 17, 2015. On the bloodiest day of the war up to that time, the man who calls himself a “supporter of peace” did not even mention Russian aggression to the Kremlin leader. This was not only irresponsible — it was dangerous, disloyal, and demoralizing, especially from the leader of a NATO member state.

Mr. President, you are correct: European leaders have been weak. They made the mistake of binding Europe’s infrastructure too closely to Russia — a country that had already begun waging hybrid warfare against the West in the 2000s. They made the mistake of negotiating with Putin at Minsk, and they demonstrated during their terms that they were leaders without strength. Their legacy is the situation we face now: Putin advanced further.

You are also right that Europe must exert stronger and firmer pressure on its own internal saboteurs — but this effort cannot succeed if the United States makes concessions to those who secretly serve Putin’s interests. After 2022, Europe began to break away from Russian energy dependence — except for those countries led by individuals who function as covert agents of Russian influence.

Viktor Orbán is undoubtedly charismatic and skilled, even charming — but he is acting as the operative of the Russian leadership within both the European Union and NATO. He has worked to obstruct sanctions and to build a political coalition friendly to Russian interests. The assignment he received from Moscow in 2016 is now clear: to flatter you, so that if you return to the presidency, Russia may turn this relationship to its advantage. Behind the polite surface, Orbán has deliberately bypassed U.S. sanctions against Russia — including during your administration.

On the surface, Orbán promises to support America — but in reality, he is undermining American strategic interests. He is sabotaging Western unity in support of Ukraine. Today, he is Putin’s most important Trojan horse in Europe — and this is clearly part of the negative legacy of President Joe Biden’s weak leadership, which I believe you are the one who can correct.

Mr. President, America needs strong and reliable allies — only such allies can advance and protect the interests of the United States. Traitors, however, must be pushed out of the alliance system.

Orbán lied when he claimed that Hungary and Slovakia could not detach themselves from Russian energy. This is simply not true. Their dependence is a deliberate political choice — so that the Kremlin’s war machine can continue to be financed.

I respectfully ask, Mr. President, that you make it clear to Viktor Orbán that, at a minimum, Russian energy must not be allowed to enter Hungary. The United States is fully capable of providing sufficient oil and natural gas to its allies. American energy is not only cleaner and safer — it is of far superior quality. Through the Croatian pipeline, it can easily reach both Hungary and Slovakia.

Orbán must not be allowed to further weaken either American or European morale. The money he pays to Putin far exceeds what Hungary contributes to helping Ukraine — while tens of thousands of civilians, including children, are being killed in Russia’s deliberate war against them.

The Ukrainian army today is the strongest in Europe — proven, committed, and capable. Alongside the Turkish military, it could become one of the most important pillars of NATO’s future. But it needs support now. Just as with a promising business startup: investment is necessary in order for its future value to be realized. The only way this war ends is if one army achieves decisive superiority. That army must not be Russia. Fortunately, it can be Ukraine.

Mr. President, America has saved the free world once before. Today, the time has come again to stand together — clearly, decisively, and without hesitation. Those who retreat or remain passive will be forgotten. Those who stand for freedom will be remembered as heroes.

The world, Europe, and we — the true friends of America in Hungary — are counting on the United States.

Make America Great Again.

With respect and esteem, Hungarian citizens who stand with America
