Before the nomination of the prime minister: fortune doesn't favor Grindeanu
The October 5 consultations at Cotroceni Palace have not yet produced a common agreement on forming a government: the PSD asked for the prime minister's mandate for Sorin Grindeanu, the PNL and the USR maintained their rejection of a PSD-led government, while the AUR demanded early elections. According to HotNews, citing liberal sources, Nicușor Dan told the PNL delegation that he leans toward nominating an independent prime minister. For now, there is no official nomination.
After the PSD's roughly twenty-minute consultation, Grindeanu announced that his party had come with an unchanged mandate: as the largest parliamentary party, it is asking to lead the government, and he himself is the candidate for prime minister. He urged the formation of a fully empowered cabinet that could carry out the revision of the budget and change the way the country is run, criticized Bolojan's austerity policy, then stressed that the PSD is not closing itself off to other parties, but supports a solution in which it itself takes part.
The PNL did not bring a new candidate for prime minister. After the meeting, Ilie Bolojan stated that if the PSD comes to power, the Liberals will go into opposition and will not take part in a joint cabinet with it. At the same time, they will wait for the president's nomination, talk with the designated prime minister, and then decide how they can contribute to resolving the deadlock. According to HotNews sources, during the talks the possibility of voting in a PSD-led government was also ruled out; however, the option of an independent candidate remained open.
Speaking for the USR, Dominic Fritz again named early elections as the solution, but indicated that his party would negotiate with whoever the president designates as prime minister. Against the idea of an independent prime minister, he argued that the head of government depends in any case on the parliamentary majority: it needs lasting, committed and consistent support, not merely 233 votes gathered on a single day. According to Fritz, such a majority is not currently in sight, and he ruled out voting for any government that includes the PSD.
The AUR delegation arrived without George Simion, represented instead by Petrișor Peiu and Dan Dungaciu. After the meeting, Dungaciu said that no meaningful dialogue had been possible on ending the crisis, and he called the president an obstacle to a solution. Peiu attacked Nicușor Dan, saying he had acted unfairly toward the AUR by questioning the party's commitment to the Euro-Atlantic alliance. The delegation demanded early elections and said it had not been informed whom the president intends to nominate. So far, the result of the afternoon's talks is that the president may seek a way out through an independent prime minister, while the parties have essentially kept to their previous positions. The PSD wants to govern, the PNL and the USR do not want a joint government with it, and the AUR is pushing for elections.

RMDSZ lawmakers are campaigning to elementary school students, right in the classroom!
Do you still remember, dear old children, dear eternal children, when the portrait of Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu and the list of their titles greeted us on the first page of every textbook, and at the start of every school year we thanked the Party for our textbooks — even when Romania had grown so poor that all we could thank the Party for were the textbooks that didn't exist?

Three times is the Hungarian charm, but we're in Romania, so today Nicușor Dan comes up with an extra one: he names the prime ministerial candidate, the fourth since May 5th. There isn't a single analyst in this country who could take the newly named candidate any more seriously than any of the previous three, but we're going to act as if we're on the edge of our seats anyway — here come the…

Bear culling quotas doubled - a massacre may be coming
On October 5, Romanian President Nicușor Dan promulgated the law that allows for the preventive culling of 859 brown bears in 2026, while also providing a framework for the removal of a further 110 animals due to immediate danger or damage, with the provisions also applying to 2027. Both quotas are roughly double those approved in 2024, when the preventive quota stood at 426 and the intervention…

DREPT: “Putinists should not be received at the presidential palace”
The DREPT party, led by Vlad Gheorghe, has asked Romanian President Nicușor Dan not to receive MEP Diana Șoșoacă at the government-formation consultations on October 5. According to the party, inviting the leader of SOS Romania grants political legitimacy to a figure who holds pro-Russian and anti-European positions.
