Axios: Trump's team held closed-door talks on next steps against Iran

Several senior officials of the U.S. administration held a meeting lasting several hours at Camp David on Friday on the next steps regarding the war with Iran and the Houthi rebels in Yemen, Axios reported, citing three American officials. The administration did not announce the meeting and provided no details about the military or diplomatic options discussed there.

According to Axios's sources, the talks were led by Vice President JD Vance. Also attending were Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The report made no mention of Donald Trump's participation. One source said that decisions were made, or at least the Middle East crisis was thoroughly discussed. The outlet did not disclose any specific decision. Axios called the Camp David meeting unusual, recalling that a similar meeting was held in June 2025, just days before the outbreak of the war between Israel and Iran.

The meeting took place amid a stalemate in U.S.–Iran negotiations. According to Axios, Trump is considering resuming large-scale military operations against Iran; on Thursday the president threatened that Iran must sign the agreement or it will cease to exist. The other topic of the talks was action against the Houthis in Yemen. According to the report, Saudi Arabia is pushing for the United States to join a planned offensive against the rebels with airstrikes, but Trump has so far been reluctant to back the idea.
