"It's my duty" – Trump, the White House's self-appointed high priest, bans the unbelievers

On Monday in New York, after his meeting with Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Donald Trump explained why he will no longer let reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico into the White House. The justification was neither legal nor political, but downright liturgical: "If they're going to write fake news, I feel that's my obligation to not let them back into a very special house." The White House, he added, is "the most special house of all." In other words, this is not an administrative building where the world's most powerful office should be held to account, but a sanctuary whose threshold the impure may not cross, and whose key sits in the high priest's pocket.

Whether this amounts to a messianic sense of mission is open to debate, but the symptoms are fairly telling. This is the man who declared in his 2025 inauguration speech that God spared him from the assassination attempt in Butler so that he could make America great again. The man who a few months later posted an AI-generated image of himself dressed as the pope. And now he is talking about a "duty" that does not spring from the Constitution — whose First Amendment happens to protect freedom of the press — but from some higher calling under which he alone decides who is worthy of asking him questions. Medieval kings, at least, didn't pretend to live in a democracy.

The story began Friday evening, the way Trump's stories usually do: with a Truth Social post. The president announced that the three outlets' "continuous 'coverage' is FAKE NEWS," and that he was therefore banning them. Citing four officials, NBC News reported that even senior White House staffers were caught off guard by the decision. Chief of Staff Susie Wiles happened to be out of the building at the time, and sources close to the president also leaked that Trump had considered something similar before but had been talked out of it. This time, there was no one to talk him out of it — or no one who dared try. On Saturday, CNN's Betsy Klein, MS NOW's Akayla Gardner and Politico's Cheyenne Haslett were simply turned away at the gate, their credentials revoked. And then came the surprise that was probably more painful for Trump than any lawsuit. On Monday, NBC, ABC, CBS — and yes, Fox News too — all refused to take banned CNN's place in the shared press arrangement known as the pool, in which one network films and shares the footage with the others. When even Fox News won't cooperate with the excommunication, that says something about where this whole affair stands: the sanctuary suddenly had no camera crew left.

That same day, CNN, MS NOW and Politico jointly sued the administration in a federal court in Washington. The lawsuit claims that access was revoked because of the content of their reporting, an open violation of the freedom of the press guaranteed by the First Amendment, and it seeks a temporary order allowing their reporters back into the White House. The administration's position is that entry to the White House is a privilege, not a right, and that it alone decides who gets in. That line sounds good, except American courts have already said otherwise twice: in 2018, when Trump revoked the credentials of CNN reporter Jim Acosta, a federal judge in Washington ordered them restored; and in 2025, when the Associated Press was shut out for refusing to call the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America," the case likewise went to court, and the trial judge ruled in the AP's favor. In both cases, the principle was the same: the government isn't required to hold press briefings, but if it does, it can't pick and choose reporters based on whether it likes what they write. Meanwhile, Trump has already signaled he might go further still: he mentioned The New York Times and The Washington Post as possible next targets, though he has not yet issued a formal ban against them.

Messiahs share one common weakness: they don't take questions well. The prophet speaks, the faithful listen, and the doubters get thrown out of the temple. But the White House is not a temple — it's a public office, funded by American taxpayers, whose occupant leases the place for four years. That the tenant doesn't get to decide who's allowed to ring the doorbell, and that this has to be explained to him yet again by a judge, is the saddest, most American part of the whole story.
