Rubio: No Chance for a Negotiated Peace

According to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, there is currently no visible chance of a negotiated end to the war launched by Russia against Ukraine, because Moscow is making territorial demands that Kyiv considers unacceptable. In an interview with the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, published on October 8, Rubio said the war has reached a strategic stalemate that could be resolved either through a negotiated agreement or further escalation.

The Secretary of State cited as one of the main obstacles to the stalled diplomatic efforts the fact that Russia considers capturing the entire Donetsk region a condition for victory, while Ukraine rejects this. He stressed, however, that the United States remains ready to help broker a settlement and continues to search for options that could lead to an end to the fighting. Rubio described the possibility of the war widening as particularly dangerous, saying it could even be linked to sabotage operations in neighboring NATO member states. He also warned that during the coming winter, Russia may try to pressure Kyiv by destroying Ukraine's electricity grid, while Ukraine's capacity to strike deep into Russian territory is growing.
