There Is a God! Trump Got Crushed in the American Midterms
In Tuesday's American midterm elections, the Democratic Party regained control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, meaning Donald Trump will face an opposition majority in both chambers for the last two years of his term. In the Senate, the Democrats secured the majority late Tuesday night, while the Democratic victory in the House was projected by CBS News, NBC News, CNN and Decision Desk HQ. According to CNN, in the past fifty years this has happened only twice — control of both chambers changing hands in a single election.
In the Senate, the Democrats needed a net gain of four seats, and they won considerably more. According to an AP tally, former Governor Roy Cooper won in North Carolina, James Talarico defeated Ken Paxton in Texas, Annie Andrews won in South Carolina, Sherrod Brown defeated Jon Husted in Ohio, Adam Hamilton defeated Senator Roger Marshall in Kansas, and Josh Turek beat Ashley Hinson in Iowa. Hamilton is the first Democrat Kansas has sent to the Senate since 1932, while Talarico won the most expensive race of the cycle despite Republicans spending far more. In Maine, Troy Jackson defeated Republican Senator Susan Collins, bringing the Democrats' total gains to at least seven Republican-held seats.
The Democrats also held on to their own seats. Jon Ossoff was re-elected in Georgia, Chris Pappas defeated former Senator John Sununu in New Hampshire, and in Minnesota Peggy Flanagan kept her seat against Michele Tafoya. Chuck Schumer, who is expected to become Senate Majority Leader, said that against all expectations they had won the Senate, and sent a message to Americans that help is on the way. Republican Majority Leader John Thune defended the work of recent years and warned that the Democrats might try to dismantle their achievements.
In the House, the Democrats needed a net gain of only three seats, and estimates point to a far larger majority. MS NOW and CNBC's election unit put the number of Democratic seats at at least 245, while NBC News projects at least 255, which would amount to a majority of roughly 75 seats. The Democrats swept one swing district after another, from Pennsylvania through Nebraska and Kentucky to Wisconsin: Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti defeated Republican Congressman Rob Bresnahan, Denise Powell won in Nebraska's 2nd District, and Zach Dembo won in Kentucky's 6th District. In Florida, according to CNN, a significant share of Latino voters also swung toward the Democrats.
Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was re-elected, and if the Democrats nominate him, he could become the first Black Speaker of the House in the history of the United States. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that voters had broken the Republicans' monopoly on power in Washington and restored the constitutional checks and balances against a president who, in her view, had governed as though he didn't need to answer to any. The election also produced historic results in governors' races: in Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms will become the first Black woman governor in the United States.
Analysts say the Democratic victory was driven mainly by discontent over the cost of living, compounded by the war with Iran and Trump's tariffs. According to a CBS poll, about 60 percent of voters said the president played a role in how they voted in their House race. The Democratic-controlled House will gain subpoena and investigative powers, while the Senate will have far greater say over presidential and judicial appointments.
The new Congress will convene in January; until then, the current one remains in session. According to The Hill, Thune now has to decide whether to use the remaining weeks to confirm as many of Trump's nominees as possible, or to focus on the spending package that funds the Department of Defense. The exact seat counts are not yet final, as vote counting continues in several close races.
