Zelensky: support needed for F-16s' anti-drone missions

The Dutch F-16 fighter jets handed over to Ukraine play a significant role in shooting down Russian jet-powered Shahed drones, and additional equipment could boost the effectiveness of their missions – Volodymyr Zelensky said after speaking by phone on October 5 with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten. According to the Ukrainian president, the aircraft received from the Netherlands already play a considerable role in defending against faster attack drones.

The two leaders also discussed further strengthening air defense and protecting critical infrastructure, though the Ukrainian presidential office did not specify what new equipment or support measures could assist the fighter jets' work. Zelensky thanked the Netherlands for its consistent support, while the talks focused on expanding defenses against Russian drone attacks. The Ukrainian head of state briefed Jetten on the contacts maintained with the American negotiating team, as well as on possible technical talks involving Ukraine, the United States and Russia. He stressed the importance of practical proposals that bring peace closer, but noted that this requires Russia to take the negotiations seriously and to stop looking for new pretexts to drag out the war.
