Sie sind wieder da! AfD at 30 percent

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has reached 30 percent support nationwide for the first time, according to the Insa polling institute's surveys. In the poll conducted for Bild and released on Saturday, Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservative alliance, the CDU/CSU, stood at just 18 percent, giving the AfD a twelve-point lead. Both figures are records in the institute's data series: the highest ever measured for the AfD and the lowest ever measured for the CDU/CSU. The conservatives' previous low point was 18.5 percent in October 2021.

The survey, based on interviews with 1,202 people, gave the Social Democratic SPD and the Greens 14 percent each, while the Left Party stood at 10 percent. Support for the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance and the liberal FDP was 4 percent each, meaning both fell short of the five-percent threshold needed to enter parliament. Compared to the previous survey, the AfD gained one percentage point while the CDU/CSU lost the same amount. Dissatisfaction with the government is also high: 79 percent of respondents said they were dissatisfied with Chancellor Merz's performance, and the same proportion rated the federal government's performance unfavorably. The identical figures for the two questions are separate results and do not necessarily reflect the same respondents.

The survey was published after the AfD's election successes in September. In the state parliament election in Saxony-Anhalt on September 6, the party won 43.8 percent of the list votes, while the CDU received 17.2 percent. This means the AfD more than doubled its 2021 result and became the state's strongest political force. In Lower Saxony, however, local elections were held in September. In the district-level tally, the CDU came first with 27.2 percent, followed by the SPD with 24.6 percent. The AfD came third with 15.9 percent, ahead of the Greens' 14.1 percent; the Left Party got six percent and the FDP 3.7 percent. These, therefore, are results from different types of elections, and neither was a national parliamentary election.
