The situation in the East is escalating: an assassination attempt was being prepared against Tusk
Poland's security services were summoned to an emergency meeting on Sunday morning after police received information about a possible assassination plot that could target Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. The announcement was made on social media by Karolina Gałecka, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Interior, and according to a report by TVP World and Reuters, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński and Tomasz Siemoniak, the minister coordinating the intelligence services, ordered immediate action. Representatives of the police, the State Protection Service responsible for guarding senior government officials, and the ABW internal security agency convened at 11 a.m. at the agency's counter-terrorism center in Warsaw.
The details made public so far are scant. Citing the private broadcaster Radio Zet, Reuters reported that police received an e-mail containing information about the threat. Who sent it, how concrete the plan is, and whether an organized group or a foreign state is behind it — the authorities have so far remained silent on these points. Government spokesman Adam Szłapka told Polsat News that the situation is serious, that Tusk was informed around 7 a.m. on Sunday, and that he is currently in Warsaw and continuing his official schedule. Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesman for the intelligence coordinator, told the PAP news agency only that he could not disclose further details, and that the press would be notified if a press conference were to be held.
The threat arrived at an already tense time: Poland is deeply divided politically and faces constant security risks due to the proximity of the war in Ukraine. In August, a 23-year-old man was detained for calling for the assassination of senior Polish politicians, and in 2024, following the assassination attempt against Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Tusk himself reported having received threats. The authorities are also on heightened alert because of a wave of violence in schools, after a school caretaker was killed in a knife attack on Thursday. As part of the broader context, the Financial Times reported in recent days, citing Western intelligence sources, that Russia is stepping up assassination attempts against European defense industry leaders — something that had already been known since a planned 2024 plot to kill Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger.
Whether the author of the letter is a lone madman, a bored provocateur, or someone's agent is for the Polish services to find out, but in today's Europe, where the Kremlin is already hunting defense industry CEOs, honestly, only one possibility remains. Well, who and what could that be?
