New Jersey governor would punish ports accepting Russian oil with sanctions
Ports and terminal operators in New Jersey that accept tankers carrying Russian diesel fuel can expect severe sanctions, Governor Mikie Sherrill warned, saying that despite Donald Trump's deal with Vladimir Putin, such imports continue to violate U.S. federal law. Sherrill called on operators to turn away the tankers and said that the state would use every legal and regulatory tool at its disposal to act against the deal.
The Kyiv Independent reported on a letter dated November 2 addressed to ports and terminal operators, in which Sherrill wrote that anyone attempting to profit from what she called illegal trade in Russian fuel should expect serious consequences, and she asked companies not to make their facilities available for receiving such shipments. In a post on X, the governor also disputed Trump's economic reasoning, arguing that buying Russian diesel would finance the war against Ukraine without lowering U.S. fuel prices.
Trump announced on October 9, after a phone call with Putin, that Russia would ship several million tons of diesel fuel to the United States and the global market. At the time, he wrote on Truth Social that more than 300,000 tons would arrive immediately, with another 500,000 tons in November, followed by a further one million tons. Sherrill, however, argues that the president does not have the authority to simply set aside the law banning Russian oil imports, which was adopted after the full-scale invasion of 2022 and whose restrictions, in her view, he can only lift if he certifies the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine. The governor is thus warning ports that relying on Trump's announcement could still mean risking a violation of the law if they accept the shipments. Sherrill also addressed the security-policy contradiction of the deal, pointing out that Russia is an ally of Iran, while the United States is at war with Tehran, whose armed forces, according to the governor, are responsible for the deaths of 23 American soldiers and the wounding of dozens more. In her letter, she pledged that New Jersey would use every means at its disposal to ensure that its ports, businesses and infrastructure cannot be used for purposes contrary to the interests of the United States and the state.

Yet it is precisely these…

America bombed Iran while Qatar was negotiating the reopening of the strait
On the eve of the midterm elections, the US military launched strikes on the area around the Strait of Hormuz, just a few hours after Donald Trump stated that the United States is not at war with Iran. At the time of the strikes, reported by The Wall Street Journal, the Qatari-mediated negotiations were still underway, in which Tehran had attached conditions to reopening the strait.
