The 'Form 6' files of Hungarian intellectuals from Romania

We took a bit of a look through Hungary's informer network files, searching for Hungarians from Romania.

I.

György Selmeczi would be a truly big name, but based on his Form 6 card, it's unlikely this will be the year's spy story:

Neither a recruitment file nor a work file was registered on Selmeczi's card, and he was dropped after just three weeks – "possibility of intelligence gathering has ceased." According to the card, the conductor was also blackmailed at the time of his recruitment.

The recruitment, or attempted recruitment, may have had something to do with the fact that the conductor was in Paris around that time.

II.

Vilmos Ágoston, the writer, was recruited on 26 January 1988 and dropped not quite two years later ("to the archive – change in family circumstances"), but it is not known whether he filed reports during that time. In his case a recruitment file was created; either no work file was created, or it was not registered on the card.

So for now we know nothing. In the spring, when the files themselves are made public, perhaps more will come to light.

MMXXVI.

Just imagine how many people, now that we're digging through these old documents, fear what might surface — that their ancestors, their relatives, turn out to have been truly rotten scoundrels.

Even now, in 2026, it still happens that someone cooperates with a power that works against the public interest. For instance, by churning out propaganda articles for the RMDSZ (Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania), or by cowardly, under group pressure and for financial gain, picking and choosing what to write about and what not to. The fact that Csaba Böjte hasn't fallen any harder, and that he can go on undisturbed with his pious lying — well, that is the recent and present-day sin of the Transylvanian Hungarian "right-wing" press. Do you work there? You can rest easy: your daughter, your grandchild, will ask you what you were doing sitting on your hands all that time.

It is currently an open question just how much of the Transylvanian press abandoned by Viktor Orbán will be snapped up by the UDMR (RMDSZ). So the "right-wing" press and its journalists have two paths before them. One is comfortable, convenient submission. But in that case, your grandchild will spit on your grave every single day. We do not live in a system where, as a journalist, you are obliged to work for a party. Just think: even under the old regime, writing propaganda earned you contempt!

And the same goes for the "left-wing" crowd twisting itself into knots for Hungarian government money: vă vedem!

And your grandchildren will see it too.

Trump's team lost, but the president stays - what comes next?

The Democrats have won both the House of Representatives and the Senate, meaning that in the last two years of Donald Trump's second presidential term he will face a Congress that can launch investigations against him, reject his nominees, and deny the new funding his policies require. Party leaders have left the possibility of impeachment open, but removing the president takes more than an…

“Ideological-patriotic” – this is given as the reason for recruitment on György Nógrádi's secret police registration card (the so-called “hatos karton”), who then, under the code name “Raguza,” was tasked with protecting the youth, since that was the assignment he received. The year is 1981, June.

Ukraine's Republican allies have thinned out, yet Kyiv may have more room to maneuver

In the November 3 midterm elections, Democrats won majorities in both chambers, but Ukraine's standing in Washington presents a mixed picture. While the mood of the Congress convening in January will be overall more pro-Kyiv, the Republican wing that stood by Ukraine against both Donald Trump and its own party leadership over the past two years has suffered heavy losses. Yet it is precisely these…

New Jersey governor would punish ports accepting Russian oil with sanctions

Ports and terminal operators in New Jersey that accept tankers carrying Russian diesel fuel can expect severe sanctions, Governor Mikie Sherrill warned, saying that despite Donald Trump's deal with Vladimir Putin, such imports continue to violate U.S. federal law. Sherrill called on operators to turn away the tankers and said that the state would use every legal and regulatory tool at its…

The "Arab RMDSZ" could form a government in Israel

The four Israeli opposition parties preparing to replace Benjamin Netanyahu are proposing Gadi Eisenkot as prime minister, after their leaders agreed on Tuesday to begin negotiations on forming a national emergency government. In last Tuesday's election, Netanyahu's bloc lost its majority, but Eisenkot's alliance has even fewer seats than his, which means the 19 seats held jointly by the two…
